My Review

The Root of the Matter is a wonderfully written book about the life and theology of John Winthrop and Roger Williams who had differing opinions in 1601 New England. Geneva Fielding and Peter Donatelli take a time travel trip to 1631 to investigate.

The characters are exciting and are well fleshed out. The combination of historical details and time travel made for an amazing read. I was engrossed from the first chapter and couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next book in the series. This book is highly recommended.

My Review

This summer collection from the Mosaic Collection is a culmination of five different stories by different authors. I enjoyed each author's varying styles and stories. Each one brought its characters to life on the page, the setting was well described, and the storylines kept me turning the pages. I was kept glued to the page wondering what would happen next.

All the stories were easy to read and kept my attention, and it would be hard to pick a favorite. I have read quite a few of the Mosaic Collections, and they never disappoint. They are God-inspired, uplifting stories that will warm your heart—highly recommended.

My Review

Eira Mae Pryce, a single woman, becomes the guardian of her best friend's baby. The baby is in danger and Eira wonders how she can possibly keep the baby safe.

The Baby and the Guardian, first in the Christmas Cabin series will keep you wondering who is threatening the baby. The villain is revealed through the storyline in a way that will have you holding your breath as their motivation is made known. The book kept me on the edge of my seat and engaged throughout the entire book.

You will root for Eira and Casper as they find their happy ending. However, not without lots of suspense and a miracle.  

Highly recommended.

My Review

Toward the Dawn has exceptional characters that have many layers. I was mesmerized by Kat Wadsworth and her strength despite everything she went through. Sebastian Jones also has his own set of troubles.

The story had plenty of secrets, danger, and calls to action by Kat and Sebastian to handle impossible situations. The storyline was engaging and had me hooked from the beginning. Part of the setting for the story was unusual and different from other stories I've read. This book was as good as the first one and I can't wait to read the next. I highly recommend it.

My daughter gifted me a tee shirt for Christmas with an image of a typewriter and the slogan: I make things up. That’s a novelist job! 🙂

Where we and our family came from and how we arrived where we are today, there’s a story in each of us. I find myself often pondering people’s back stories. I regret knowing only the tiniest bits of my own family’s backstory. When I had the opportunity to ask the questions, I was too naive to know what to ask. Decades later I made it up. Tangled Promises was born.

A recurring theme as I wrote Tangled Promises focuses on this verse: The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all. ~Proverbs 22:2

Clara and Daniel lived in the same world. She the daughter of the Baron and he the family’s humble carriage driver. Very much in love with one another, but their social status dictated rules created to forbid their union.

In a world so shattered by differences, God calls us to see we’re all the same in His eyes. From the unborn baby to kings in the land, we’re all cherished by Him. He calls us to forgiveness and love.

My Review

Tangled Promises is a story of betrayal, secrets, and an unwanted betrothal. The story had some twists and other surprises I didn't see coming.

It is fast paced with continuing circumstances driving the plot forward. Clara and Daniel's secret touched my heart, along with his ability to protect Clara.

The ending wrapped up all the questions I had. The story was well-written and inspiring.

U.S. Marine Vietnam Sacrifice is a memoir by Raymond Isaac Lindsey, a Vietnam veteran, of his experiences after the war, written by his wife, Crystal Mary Lindsey. At nineteen, Raymond (Ray) fought in the Vietnam War against children recruited by the Viet Cong. The experience left him with physical and mental injuries. His therapy and treatment in Japan caused more harm, and when he returned home, he experienced symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Despite having a loving family and friends, Ray felt like he was in another world most of the time, which affected his relationships. He could not sleep because of his narcolepsy, and when he finally closed his eyes, he had nightmares. Ray eventually met Crystal, an Australian nurse whose father had experienced PTSD. The two fell in love, and she brought light into his dark life and helped him confront his demons.

Ray’s story is an emotional tale that raises awareness about PTSD. The book highlights symptoms of PTSD, which include anxiety, mood swings, depression, and sensitivity to sounds and smells. Ray experienced all these and more but did not let them defeat him. U.S. Marine Vietnam Sacrifice is non-linear, but it is easy to follow. It contains flashbacks from Ray's life before the war and the circumstances that led him to join the military. His sense of adventure and freedom was short-lived, and I felt terrible for him. I loved his diligence in trying to recover. He tried many activities like motorcycling, painting, playing golf, and joining singles groups to cope with his trauma. Most people experiencing depression and anxiety fail to try and end up committing suicide or being consumed by the darkness. The book is well written and organized, with pictures of Ray and a consistent format. The picture of the military boots and helmet at the beginning of every chapter was a nice touch. Crystal Mary Lindsey wrote passionately, and I appreciate her sharing Ray’s story with the world.

My Review

The story takes place in Horizon, Idaho 1891. Mae and Landon meet accidentally in town when Landon is there to get details going for the railroad spur coming to town. The story has everything I would want in a historical romance novel. It is filled with anticipation, family struggles, danger, faith, and love. I couldn't put it down.

The characters of Landon and Mae are inspirational despite everything that's against them. I felt I knew them quite well by the end of the book. The ending was amazing and touched my heart as everything came together.

My Review

Texas Ranch Cold Case is a story about a twenty-year-old cold case, and the daughter, Ally that
desperately wants to find out what happened to her mother. She doesn't realize until she meets Tucker, that her life is about to change dramatically and throws them together for the search.

The story is full of suspense, danger, and unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Constant action and surprises kept me engaged in the story as I tried to determine what would happen next.

The ending wrapped up and revealed everything well. I was kept guessing until the end. You don't want to miss this roller-coaster ride of suspense!  Highly recommended.

Dear Reader:

I’ve been an Anglophile as long as I can remember, from reading the classics like Dickens and Austen to watching BBC television. In honor of Beryl’s English heritage, I hope you enjoy this scrumptious scone recipe:

2 C unbleached all-purpose flour

2 T sugar

4 t baking powder

½ t salt

3 T unsalted butter, cold

1 egg yolk beaten with 1 T milk (for glaze)

Strawberry jam (to serve)

Preheat your oven to 425F.

In a medium bowl, place the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and butter. Rub the mixture together with your fingers to break up the butter, until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the milk slowly, mixing as you add, using enough of the milk to get your dough to come together with no lumps remaining. (Your dough should be quite sticky. If a good consistency is not achieved with the listed amount of milk, continue adding until your dough reaches a good consistency.)

Spoon the dough out until a well-floured surface. Generously dust the top of the dough and knead the dough 2-3 times to coat it with flour and smooth the surface. Press the dough into a round that is roughly 1 inch thick.

Using a well-floured cookie cutter, cut the dough into 2-inch circles. (Be sure to press the cookie cutter straight down and up. Twisting the cookie cutter will impact the amount of rise you get on your scones.)

Place the rounds onto a greased and floured baking sheet. Brush them gently with the egg yolk and milk mixture.

Bake the scones for 12-15 minutes, until golden and firm.

Remove the baked scones from the oven and let them cool for 30 minutes (if you can resist). If you like softer scones, cover them with a clean tea towel as they cool.

My Review

Bery's Bounty Hunter is a fast-paced Western novel with somewhat different characters. Beryl originally from Liverpool, goes to America in answer to an ad from a mail-order bride agency. She meets Nellie along the way. Thinking things aren't what they appear, Beryl escapes the couple accompanying them.

The storyline is filled with twists, danger, and deception. The main characters are well developed, the descriptions of the countryside and cities made the places come alive, and the story was an easy writing style to follow. The ending wrapped up nicely. I enjoyed the references and prayers to God and how the characters' faith grew.

My Review

All the Little Animals is a lovely bedtime storybook that covers animals from A-Z with rhyming text. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and colored to catch the eye of any child. I feel children will love it and it will become a book read often.

I'm sure that younger children will be drawn to the illustrations while being read to. Children will learn that even though animals are much different, there are similarities when it comes to the need for sleep. I know my grandchildren will love it.
