MEET THE AUTHOR:
Melissa Stuart lives in Los Angeles, California with her family, their English Mastiff, Gucci, and their pony, Luna! Melissa and her husband stay busy traveling all over the country with their boys’ hockey teams. She loves being a Hockey Mom and watching her boys chase their dream of following in their dad’s footsteps to play in the NHL! Her happy place is with her little girl, Stella, at the barn surrounded by horses and their precious Luna. Sun Valley, Idaho is her family’s favorite summer getaway destination. When they’re there, Melissa feels most inspired to write sitting by the river, surrounded by mountains and nature! Her dream of becoming a published author for the first time came true in early 2021, as she shared her story “Find Your Sunshine” in a book co-written by 10 other inspiring authors—all of whom were sharing stories about shining their light and becoming difference makers in the world! Melissa hopes this story will inspire children to always look up. She wishes to teach them that true joy comes when we shine our own light and show kindness to others. That’s the secret to finding our sunshine!

1) What is your writing schedule?
As a mom of 3 kids with busy after school sports and activities, I found the only quiet time I had for writing was in the mornings when they all were in school. I tried to make sure to set aside an hour to write each morning. I was able to write it in about five months' time.
2) Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?
The hardest character to write was Twinkle the butterfly because for me she represents my grandmother, who had just passed away. So, every time in the book where it has Twinkle say, “Always look up little Star, I’m right here,” it makes me get a little emotional and smile at the same time.
The easiest character to write about was Luna the pony because no words needed to be written for her to say. Her very presence in the book shows just how healing and magical horses are to be around,
3) In your book you state
that the pony Luna and your little girl are a match made in heaven.
Why is that?
Luna arrived from across the country and was already named Luna by her previous owner. Her name means moon and my little girl's name is Stella, which means star. After searching for the perfect pony for over a year, I just knew when I saw her picture and her name that she was meant to be ours.
4) Do you have another profession besides writing?
I was in the fitness industry for over 15 years until my back ruptured after a day of horseback riding and I ended up having to have multiple surgeries over the next couple years. Finding a new passion for writing saved me during this hard time and now I am so grateful to get this little story of mine out in the world!
5) What made you write a story about butterflies and horses?
After my grandmother passed away, yellow butterflies seemed to always appear when I was riding at the stable. When I could no longer ride due to all my spinal surgeries, they appeared when my little girl would be riding. It was such a gift and brought comfort to my heart to be surrounded by horses and butterflies during one of the hardest times in my life.
