ABOUT THE BOOK

A Life Once Dreamed
Title: A Life Once Dreamed
Author: Rachel Fordham
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: August 4, 2020
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Where you come from matters far less than where you're going

Six years ago, a shocking secret sent Agnes Pratt running in search of a new start. She found it in Penance, a rugged town of miners and lumberjacks in the Dakota Territory. In the shadow of the Black Hills, she became Miss Aggie, respected schoolteacher and confirmed old maid--despite being only twenty-four. But the past has a way of catching up with people.

When childhood friend and former sweetheart James Harris accepts a position as the town doctor, Aggie's pleasantly predictable days suddenly become anything but. James wants to know why Agnes left behind the life they had dreamed of creating for themselves--but he is precisely the one person who can never know.

Can a healing light be shed on the past? Or will the secret Agnes can't seem to outrun destroy her chance at happiness?

MY REVIEW

Agnes & James grew up in Buffalo, New York as childhood friends and then fell in love. Prior to getting married, Agnes leaves for Penance to start a new life, carrying a secret with her. Six years later, James now a doctor, decides to move to Penance. Can they survive in the same town?

The characters, plot, and setting was wonderful. Parts of the story made me smile, cry, and laugh. I was hooked from the very beginning. This story had everything for a captivating read. Inspirational & Uplifting.

The story had mystery, a second chance at love, suspense, and lessons in what God's love can do. James learns that the family life he lived in Buffalo was flawed. He was prejudice and narrow-minded then but learns to set those traits aside in Penance. Highly recommended read.

I received a copy from the author and voluntarily choose to review it. All opinions are my own.

Author Q & A

Tell me about yourself. What got you started writing?

I first considered writing a novel in 1999. But I need to go back a bit farther to really get to the seedof where all this started for me. In 1995, my mother-in-law, Claudette Harris Alexander, shared a book with me, one she thought I would really enjoy. I was busy and let time go by without reading it. She asked me again if Id read it. Several times. I said no, but that I would. The best-laid plans, as they say.

Very unexpectedly, Claudette died that same year from a brain aneurysm. Weeks passed, and as I was cleaning bookshelves downstairs, I happened across that little volume and immediately sat down and read it. Claudette was right!

I felt an immediate connection with the thread of hope woven through that gentle love story—Love Comes Softly, by Janette Oke, originally published by Bethany House Publishers in 1979. That sent me searching for more inspirational fiction published not only by Bethany House but elsewhere in the Christian Booksellers Association market (CBA). I devoured it and developed a strong interest in historical fiction.

A handful of years later my husband and I were driving back to Colorado from Texas late one night. I finished a novel, turned to him, and said (only joking at the time), I think I could write one of those.Without blinking, he said, Well, do it.Competitive at heart, I nodded and said, Okay!

My first novel made it to the review board at Bethany House Publishers in 2000, after which I received a very nice rejection letter. Writing that first story was a learning experience for me that I took to heart. I then determined to set about seriously studying the craft of writing. And all these years later, I’ve just published my 17th novel.

How did you come up with your book idea? What inspired you?

Ideas for my novels typically stem from a question I’m wrestling with, a spiritual struggle perhaps—and real history. Real history is always involved. All of that is true for Colors of Truth.

The theme of truth runs throughout this story. And also lies. Lies told to us. Lies we tell ourselves. Lies we tell others. We live in a time when integrity and truth seem hard to come by. God met me on the pages of Colors of Truth and drew me closer to him through the charactersstruggles. I hope readers experience the same.

What was the most difficult part of writing this book? How did you overcome this difficulty?

I wrote this book during the last year of my father’s life here on earth. Dad had a ten-year journey with dementia and passed in August 2019. So much of what we experienced together, of what dad (and also my Heavenly Father) taught me during those last days, weeks, and months made it onto the pages of Colors of Truth.

The never-failing love of both my earthly father and Heavenly Father got me through.

Who is your favorite character from the novel? What about them makes them your favorite?

I love them all yet feel a special closeness to Wade and Catriona because I wrote the story in their POV. But I have to say that Tempy’s character first captured my heart when I wrote Christmas at Carnton (a Carnton novella) and With This Pledge (Carnton book 1). Tempy’s character is based on the real African American woman who served as the cook at Carnton for the McGavock family for the majority of her life.

I also love Nora’s character. I’ve always wanted to write a story with sisters, and that Catriona and Nora are Irish made writing it especially enjoyable. I’m currently writing the third and final Carnton novel which will release Summer 2021, and the heroine? Nora, all grown up!

Do your characters (or message) ever seem to have a life of their own or agenda?

Oh gracious yes. I’m often surprised when something happens in the story I’m writing. My husband always shakes his head (when I tell him this) and counters, "But you’re the author. You know what’s coming!" But as I tell him, these characters are "living, breathing people" who just happen to live inside me. They have minds of their own.

As far as the message of the novel, I rarely know that until I’m well into writing the book. Sometimes not until the first draft is completely written. Then in the rewrite, I go back and strengthen the story and character motivations in that regard.

How has writing this book impacted you personally?

God met me at so many turns in this story. But the ultimate truth that he engraved on my heart as I wrote Colors of Truth is to tell the truth. No matter the cost. Always. That means telling the truth to myself, to others, and to him. Because he IS truth.

How many books do you currently have published? What genres?

Seventeen. All historical fiction/romance. Seven written against the backdrop of Colorado history, ten written about real Southern history. The ten Southern novels are set against the authentic history of three antebellum mansions in Nashville—Carnton, Belle Meade, and Belmont—and the people who lived and worked there.

What is your favorite thing about writing? Your least favorite?

Favorite thing? Readers. Hands down.

Second favorite thing? Having written.

Least favorite thing? Writing the first draft. I’m a writer who lives for rewrites!

What authors in your genre inspire you most?

There are so many authors I read who inspire me, who I learn from, that I hesitate to name a handful and leave others out. But I’m grateful for each one! I will say that I’m especially excited about a favorite novel Redeeming Love (by Francine Rivers) coming to the big screen in 2021. Wish we could do a massive "girls night out" and all go see that together!

What would you tell a beginning author who wants to publish but doesnt believe he/she has enough talent?

Every "no" along the way is really part of God’s final "Yes!" when his perfect timing is reached. Never. Give. Up. Keep honing your skills and seeking his will.

In a town battered and bruised by war, one woman embarks upon an impossible search--and one man must face the past in the very place that almost destroyed him.

Tennessee, 1866. According to the last letter Irish immigrant Catriona O'Toole received from her twin brother, Ryan, he was being dispatched to Franklin, Tennessee, whereas a conscripted Confederate soldier--he likely endured the bloody Battle of Franklin that claimed the lives of thousands. Catriona leaves behind the lush green of their Irish homeland in search of him, with nothing to her name except the sum of cash Ryan, sent to their family. Now the sole provider for her seven-year-old spitfire sister, Nora, Catriona hopes to reunite the siblings--the only surviving members of their devastated family.

Wade Cunningham is a former Federal soldier who now works for the newly formed United States Secret Service and is trying to uncover counterfeiting rings in the postwar South. In order to infiltrate their sophisticated enterprise, he must pose as a former Confederate in Franklin--a town where counterfeit greenbacks run rampant. When Wade meets Catriona, he is immediately intrigued by her and the little redheaded scamp in her care--but what he doesn't anticipate is that the cash in Catriona's possession is some of the most convincing counterfeit money he's ever seen. Soon the object of Wade's affection is also the suspect in a major crime--one he's expected to prosecute.

With rich historical detail and multifaceted prose, USA TODAY bestselling author Tamera Alexander tells a riveting tale of truth, betrayal, and unlikely romance that unveils the many shades of God's perfect redemption.

When she’s not writing, Tanya loves classic movies, walking, and a good cup of tea.

MY REVIEW

A Ranger for the Twins is one filled with frustration and then hope even in the direst of circumstances. Lucie, her heart broke and her reputation ruined, returns to her home town to find most of the
townspeople are against her and blame her for what her ex-husband did.

Trying to rebuild her life and give her children stability, she starts the Hollydale Wellness and Training Center. Then she gets reunited with Caleb Spindler and her life gets more complicated.

Learning trust, forgiveness, and how to love again are all lessons learned in the storyline. The characters are real to life. Lucie is a down-to-earth loving mother of twins and is determined. Caleb is loving, caring, and steadfast, standing behind Luice giving her support just when she needs it. The twins Ethan and Mattie are sweet and entertaining children.

The ending wrapped up everything nicely. A very sweet and uplifting story. Highly recommended.

My Review

The genre of the movie is Amish Romance.  It's a movie that brings out lots of emotions. It's sad, happy, uplifting, and inspirational.

Katrina Yoder, an author, goes home for her father's funeral after being away for ten years. She is met with resistance from her sister who still holds a grudge when she left her Amish family and roots behind to become an Englisher.

Trying to fit back in, she's hoping that her sister will forgive her. She has an Englisher boyfriend but has conflicted thoughts about where she truly belongs.

It's a story of forgiveness, comprimise, and finding true love. It's by far one of the best Amish movies I've seen in a while.  I enjoyed it very much.

Pretending to Wed Blog Tour & Giveaway by Melissa Jagears

About the Book

Book: Pretending to Wed

Author: Melissa Jagears

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: May 28, 2020

It’s a match made in heaven…as long as they don’t fall in love!

The ranch Nolan Key has spent decades working for, even lost a leg for, is now his—or at least it should be. But an absurd clause in his father’s will means he’s in danger of losing the place to his lazy, undeserving cousin. Nolan finds himself scrambling to save his home—by proposing marriage to the town laundress.

Corinne Stillwater’s hands have betrayed her. Numb from hours of doing the same work over and over, her hands will only heal, according to the town doctor, if she gives up the laundry and marries. But she’s been stung repeatedly by love before, so that is one remedy she can’t swallow.

When Nolan offers Corinne a marriage in name only, how can she refuse? Such a partnership could give them the security they seek, but what if the ranch isn’t as secure as they believe, and their lives—and dreams—aren’t quite as compatible as they thought?

Pretending to Wed is the second book in the Frontier Vows Series by award-winning Christian romance author Melissa Jagears. If you like marriage-of-convenience stories that deal with the nitty-gritty of making a relationship work, you’ll love this authentic romance set in a time gone by that tackles issues still relevant for today.

The Elusive Electrical Spark to Awaken Frankenstein’s Monster

The plot of Pretending to Wed just wasn’t coming together for me. I had a romantic dilemma, but I didn’t love the characters. They were boring. And if I’m going to write a book, a.k.a. read it a bazillion times, I have to really want to read the book myself. I decided to take a break from the weeks of struggle and read. I was recommended a book because of the author’s great voice (I can’t recommend it because it’s not a clean novel), but I loved the fact that the heroine was a scientific illustrator. I wondered if I could give my heroine a scientific hobby and came up with inventing. That single character tidbit was the jolt that awakened Frankenstein’s Monster. She came alive! The research into what she could have patented at the time led my imagination to the egg hatching romance scene in the middle of the story and I was hooked! I couldn’t wait to read my book that didn’t yet exist.

MY REVIEW

Set in 1884, Wyoming Territory, the author combines the western flavor with the historical aspects well.

Nolan, a rancher, living alone after his father dies, and dealing with the loss of his leg, is not adjusting as well as he thinks. He's never felt he measured up to what his father wanted and his will confirms it. Now, he is forced to do something he doesn't want to keep the ranch from the clutches of his cousin, Matt.

Corinne, a laundress, struggling with her own demons from the mistakes of her past, tries to fit into the town she fled to.

The story is one of redemption, a second chance at love; even though it doesn't come easy. The characters were likable and the tension in the story made it exciting and unpredictable. A very good read.

I received an ARC and voluntarily choose to review it.

The Secret Place of Thunder Blog Tour & Giveaway by Alicia G. Ruggieri

About the Novella

The mountains have imprisoned her long enough...Edna Sue O’Connell came back to the Kentucky hills out of duty and can’t wait for the chance to escape again. Her work as a horseback librarian in rural Appalachia provides enough income for her invalid father to survive in the midst of the Great Depression, but it affords her with little else.

When an opportunity arises for Edna to take on an additional book delivery area, she spies a glimmer of hope that she might find a way out of Willow Hollow after all… and that she might actually make something of her life apart from the tragedy that has filled it thus far.

But the new routes give Edna more than she ever bargained for. Slowly, she finds that the mountains contain many valuable secrets – if she has the grit to meet them.

MY REVIEW

Edna Sue, a horseback librarian at Willow Hollow is confused, feeling trapped, and has lost her faith.

God uses the head librarian to try to bring her back to him, but she
isn't convinced or ready.

The story is about how God uses others to get his message of acceptance, redemption, and love to those who are bitter and hurt.

The character of Edna Sue is courageous, stubborn, yet giving of herself. The writing style is easy to read, the characters well-developed, and the story is inspirational and uplifting.

I received an ARC from the author and choose to review it. All opinions are my own.

Welcome Barbara Goss to Bizwings Blog

Amazon best-selling author, Barbara Goss, lives in Western New York and to date has written 42 Christian/Clean Romance books, mostly westerns. She enjoys crossword puzzles, penny slots, reading, swimming, and her two cats, but not necessarily in that order. She writes exciting stories with a bit of God's word spread within, without dominating the story.

Barbara began writing in 1988 and her first book, Forbidden Legacy, won first prize for fiction at a Christian Writers Convention in Titusville, Florida in 1989. This won her a book contract with Publishers: Fleming Revell and later Baker Books. She wrote four books for them under contract. She then took a few years off to work full time as a secretary to the county hospital and the local school system.

Barbara's greatest influence in writing is the 100 books written by Grace Livingston Hill. As a Christian writer, she weaves some godliness into the romance and adventure yet her books are always clean. Barbara is well on her way to catching up to Ms. Livingston.

She is now turning her wonderful Ebooks into Audiobooks. Look for them on Amazon.
